Julia Kate makes pop music for the girls who want to dance, cry, and feel a little less isolated or unseen. The valley-girl from Sherman Oaks, California, turns the messy, emotional, and sometimes chaotic experience of growing up into pop songs that feel like pages ripped straight from her journal. Her music explores romance, friendship, heartbreak, grief, nights out, body image, and everything in between, blending vulnerable storytelling with catchy hooks and an undeniable pop energy. For Julia, songwriting has always been her therapy. When she doesn’t know how to say something out loud, she writes it down. Her songs become a place to process life’s highs and lows while creating something listeners can see themselves in. One song might make you want to dance around your bedroom, while the next has you crying into your pillow. That emotional contrast is at the heart of the “pop girl” experience Julia wants to create.

Currently studying Songwriting and Music Business at Berklee College of Music, Julia is developing her artistry both creatively and within the music industry. Her sound draws inspiration from artists including Taylor Swift, Lorde, Olivia Rodrigo, Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish, and Sabrina Carpenter. Her background in musical theater has also shaped her expressive vocal style and love of storytelling. Sonically, she combines electronic pop and pop-rock elements with intimate acoustic moments, creating music that feels cinematic while staying grounded in real-life experiences.

Julia began writing songs in high school and has continued developing her sound as an independent artist, working with producers and collaborators since she was 16. Julia was introduced by a family friend to producer, Johnny What (JuiceWRLD, Pentatonix). Johnny took Julia under his wing, and along with musical director Nick Rosen and Jacob Wick, formerly with the band Dreamers, the three of them crafted Julia’s first EP, just a kid (2022). Before heading to her first year at Berklee, Julia returned to the studio with Nick Rosen and recorded her second EP, yearbook, released in September 2023. Since then, she has been releasing a series of singles that have continued to shape her evolving identity as an artist. Her music has taken her to stages across Los Angeles, including The Troubadour, Whisky a Go-Go, Hotel Café, and The Mint, as well as performances in the Boston area through Berklee.

Now, Julia is entering a new chapter. With an EP in the works, collaborations with fellow Berklee students, and her new single “Broken Machine,” she is continuing to experiment, grow, and get closer to defining the sound that is uniquely hers. “Broken Machine” represents this new era: honest, emotional, and unafraid to embrace the complicated parts of being young and figuring yourself out. Julia Kate isn’t interested in making pop music just for the sake of making pop music. She wants to make songs that feel like memories. Songs you can dance to on a night out, scream by yourself in a car, cry to after a breakup, or listen to years later and remember exactly who you were when you first heard them.
